At No. 22 First Circular Road, in Cantonments, Accra, Ghana—where W. E. B. Du Bois formerly lived—is where you'll find the Du Bois Center. There, on August 27, 1963, he perished. On June 22, 1985, it was made public, and in November of that same year, it was designated as a national memorial.
The well-known African-American academic and civil rights activist who spent his final years in Accra inspired the construction of this center. Pan-African culture is practiced here.
The Centre is hidden away from the commotion of the metropolis, Accra, and is situated on exquisite grounds of tranquil beauty close to the city's center.
This center, which served as a place of inspiration for many, currently houses a gallery of manuscripts, a research library, as well as the graves of the author and his wife.
The Marcus Garvey Guest House (basic rooms from $40/Bed & Breakfast) and the grave of Dr. DuBois and his devoted wife Shirley Graham DuBois are among the four main structures that make up The Centre, a complex. The residence where Dr. DuBois spent his final years is also included.
Directly behind the DuBois residence is an open-air theatre with a rural backdrop. It is easy for visitors to see why the 'Father of Pan Africanism' cherished the tranquility of his final residence.
Numerous original photographs, the majority of which are in black and white and depict scenes from his life alongside images of figures like Paul Robeson, Malcolm X, Kwame Nkrumah, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Images of his friendship with Mao Tse-Tung and his visits to China, notably the first one in 1936, are also shown.
The residence is open to visitors, including the subterranean bath built so the 93-year-old icon could enter it without difficulty. The tributes to his family, including his first wife Nina, second wife Shirley Graham-DuBois, and daughters Burghardt and Yolande, are noteworthy as well.
You can visit the library after the residence. To establish a library of international magnitude, the library, which houses Dr. DuBois' library and a collection of literature relating to Dr. DuBois and Pan Africanism, must also be extended. If visitors want to get a list of the books Du Bois used to read, they must acquire special authorization to enter his library.
