Al Khanafah Protected Area

North of Tayma, on the western fringe of the Great Nafud Desert, is where you'll find Al-Khunfah Protected Area. It covers 19,339 square kilometers of land. In 1987, the area was officially recognized as a natural reserve. It is distinguished by its sandstone topography, which includes hills, plateaus, valleys, gorges, and sandy areas. It also has mountains that rise 1141 meters above sea level.


Along with other shrubs, herbs, and grasses, the Tamarix aphylla, Calligonum, and Lycium shawii are among the most significant trees in the protected area. The Reem Gazelle (also known as the 'Sand Gazelle') and a small number of the Idmi Gazelle (also known as the 'Mountain Gazelle') are among the most significant animals. It also has foxes, hares, jerboas, and numerous resident and migratory birds like the 'Houbara bustards,' 'Eurasian stone-curlew,' and various reptiles. ​

  • See flocks of world-class birding species flying over your head while you enjoy your time on the island.
  • On land, you might see different species of animals like Sand Gazelle and Mountain Gazelle.
  • The sandstone topography is one of the island's main attractions.
  • Camp in between the mountains and gorges to wake up to stunning views of mountains and exotic birds and Gazelles.
  • Since this location is made up of rocky terrain, go off-roading in a 4X4 vehicle.
  • Take a viewing excursion to see the mountain range and indulge in camping there.
  • This valley is an excellent place for hiking because steep mountains surround it. Here, you can hike up the mountains to explore the unusual geological characteristics. While hiking along its winding course, sandstone rocks can be observed.
  • This valley is a location for rock climbing. Climbing up, down, or across naturally occurring rock formations can give you an adrenaline rush.
