One of the top tourist destinations in the city is ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo, formerly known as Natura Artis Magistra. This spectacular zoo is located in a sizable park in the charming Plantage neighborhood of the city.

ARTIS is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, having been established in 1838. It is home to some 900 different animal species and 250 different types of trees, including the Heimans Oak, which dates back to 1750 and is Amsterdam's oldest monumental oak. In particular, the Aquarium from 1882, is one of the magnificent listed structures on the grounds' wonderfully landscaped property.

  • Planetarium:

A display that shows the moon, other planets, and stars. Check the schedule on the day of your visit to organize your visit. The majority of the shows are in Dutch, although some are in English. To the left of the main entrance is where you'll find the planetarium.

  • Aquarium:

The structure is located in the zoo's southeast corner. A tropical coral reef wall, an Amazonian mangrove, an Amsterdam canal, and a coral table are all on show.

  • Lemur Land:

View the cheeky lemurs up close and observe how they sunbathe.

  • Savannah:

On the park's northern edge, you can see zebras, giraffes, and kudus all together with Amsterdam's Entrepotdok canal in the distance.

  • Elephants:

The enclosure for Asian elephants is located close to the Savannah region. A bridge over the lake separates them.

  • Gorilla House:

Get up close and personal with a gorilla family.

  • Butterfly Pavilion:

Enter this lush enclosure to find yourself surrounded by thousands of butterflies, including the eye-catching Blue Morpho. Other features include the Insectarium, a large reptile house with crocodiles, and cat exhibits including enclosures for lions and jaguars.

  • Library:

There is a zoology and botany history library in Artis. Along with the libraries of the Amsterdam Botanical Garden and the Zoological Museum, it also houses the zoo's library. Additionally, it houses the archives of numerous zoologists and botanists, including Hugo de Vries' archive. 3000 manuscripts, 20,000 volumes, and 80,000 animal prints are included.

  • Other things to do at ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo:
  1. Visit Historical City Park to see flora and trees that are 100 years old, and unwind by the fountain on Artisplein.
  2. Take a breather and enjoy some food at the on-site cafe and restaurant, De Plantage.
  3. If you decide to have a professional photo shoot, meet with your photographer and strike a pose for 5–10 images in a stunning location.
  4. All you have to do is smile when the photographer suggests the setting and stance.
