Florence's oldest and most recognizable bridge was built in 1345. It crosses the Arno River. What is different about it is that it has rows of jewelry shops on both sides, a practice dating as far back to the 16th Century when butchers had to vacate their shops for goldsmiths. The bridge also has an elevated pedestrian crossing, the Vasari Corridor. It was used by the Medicis to privately cross between one palace to the other. Today, it is an iconic portrayal of Florence's history, art, and enchanting beauty.
