The Kanheri caves are a collection of Buddhist caverns tucked away inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park's perimeter near Mumbai. These are considered more than 2000 years old and were initially used by Buddhist monks as a monastery. What astounds a knowledgeable explorer is how many caves may have been excavated from a single basaltic outcrop. THINGS TO DO AT KANHERI CAVES:

Explore the many caves as they come: The prehistoric Kanheri caverns are accessible through a moderate 15-minute climb from the park's base location. The first cave, which is on the far right when you are facing the caverns, is a vihara. A long, open cave known as No. 2 is located in the center. Great Chaitya cave, commonly known as cave number 3, is the next cave on the left of cave number 2. The 11th cave is also remarkable, the second-largest cave after the Great Chaitya cave, called Darbar cave. Study the carvings on the rocks: The caves show how India's Buddhist culture and art form have flourished. A visit to the Kanheri caves provides a rare chance to observe the grace and simplicity of Buddhist design. Avalokitesvara, a bodhisattva who personifies the compassion of all Buddhas, is the cave's most prominent figure. Embrace adventurous natural hikes and trails: As a result of the abundance of nature paths in and around the caves, Kanheri is one of the well-liked hiking locations in Mumbai. Most of the caverns must be reached by climbing uphill and downhill. There are steps built into the rock to make the ascent easier. This journey is especially suitable for birdwatchers because the entire stretch is alive with different species of birds. Listen to the soothing tune of waterfalls: Because there are more seasonal falls during the wet season, the caverns' charming quirkiness multiplies. Even the nearby basaltic hills appear to be hidden by the lush canopy of vegetation, and it serves as an additional draw for tourists. Check out SANJAY GANDHI National Park: Sanjay Gandhi National Park is renowned for its verdant surroundings. Some of the park's most well-liked activities include the tiger and lion safari, boating, and the Van Rani miniature train.
