Falaj Al Mualla Fort

Falaj Al Mualla Fort is an ancient structure located in the city of Umm Al Quwain in the United Arab Emirates. Constructed by a local sheik in the late 17th century, this fort is an example of the region’s traditional military architecture and engineering. The fort is a symbol of strength, fortitude, and resilience, in a society that relies heavily on protection from invaders and local threats.

Even though the town now boasts a museum, it is still a sleepy farming community with only 60 households who work primarily in agriculture and farming. Here, unlike in other emirates, residents continue to rely on more conventional means of supporting themselves. The first poultry farm in the United Arab Emirates is located at Falaj Al Mualla.

The fort is an imposing structure, reaching up to five stories in height at its highest point. Its walls are made of limestone and coral to create a solid defense against invaders or anyone trying to breach the fort’s protective boundary. Not only does this add to the overall structure’s strength, but it also provides a unique aesthetic all its own. The fort’s overall design is symmetrical, with four staggered square towers set apart for watch-keeping and defense. Inside the main quarters, there is a large in-ground well for storing water for long battles and siege warfare. Additionally, there is an elevated balcony made of wood, which is connected to the entrance of the fort and serves as an observation platform.

At the main entrance to the fort, visitors will find a massive wooden door that is intricately carved with floral and geometric patterns. Additionally, the door is fitted with a heavy iron lock to protect it from invaders, should the need arise. Inside the fort, visitors can explore the inner chambers and rooms that were used by the sheik and his family to live in, as well as store supplies during a prolonged siege. The strategically placed windows, which overlook the city, also serve as a reminder of the protection the fort afforded against potential attackers.

Finally, Falaj Al Mualla Fort stands out as a testament to the region’s rich cultural history and heritage. Its architecture and design reflect the ingenuity and creativity of the people of Umm Al Quwain, who fashioned the fort from local materials to protect it from everyday threats. For these reasons, the fort is a popular destination for those interested in gaining a better understanding of the region’s past, as well as admiring the fort’s impressive architecture and design.
